The 3 Breathing Exercises That Turned My Bansuri from “Gasping” to “Endless Melody” (You’ll Feel the Difference in One Day)

Hey Flute Lovers,

Be honest: How long can you hold one clean note right now?

5 seconds? 8 seconds? Or do you run out of breath and the note get paused with a sad little “pffttt”?

There are three simple breathing exercises.

Tonight, no flute needed for the first 5 minutes. Just you, your lungs, and me cheering you on.

Exercise 1 - The "Belly Balloon" (3 Minutes)

Sit straight.

Put one hand on your belly, one on your chest.

Breathe in slowly through nose → only the belly hand should move (chest stays still).

Breathe out through mouth like you’re fogging a mirror → belly falls.

Do it for 3 minutes. Feel your belly become a big balloon.

This is the exact way we’re supposed to breathe when we play bansuri. 90 % of beginners breathe only from the chest → tiny breath → loose notes.

Exercise 2 - The "Candle Flame" (3 Minutes)

Sit straight.

Imagine a candle placed at a distance of 20 cm in front of your mouth.

Breathe out super slowly through pursed lips → flame should bend but never flicker out.

Try to make one exhale lasts 15–20 seconds.

Rest 5 seconds, repeat 10 times.

This teaches you the steady, controlled air stream that makes long, singing notes on Bansuri.

Exercise 3 - The "Flute Breath"

Cover first three holes.

Inhale using Belly Balloon (4 seconds).

Blow a soft, steady Sa → try to make it last as long as possible without shaking.

When you’re empty, don’t gasp → just relax, wait 3 seconds, inhale slowly again.

Goal: Day 1 → 12–15 seconds clean Sa

Day 7 → 20–25 seconds (yes, really!)

Tonight's 10-minutes promise

Do Exercise 1 → 2 → 3 right now.

Then measure your longest clean Sa before sleep.

Write the number in the comments tomorrow morning.

One week from today, you’ll laugh at how short your old breath was.

Your lungs are ready.

Your bansuri is waiting.

Let’s make those notes fly.

See you in our next blog. Until then, breathe deep and blow long.
