Bansuri Troubleshooting: Fix These 5 Common Problems In Under 10 Minutes (No Shop Visit Needed!)

Hey Flautist,

Your flute suddenly sounds horrible and you’re panicking?

Stop.. 95 % of “my bansuri is broken” messages, I get, are fixed at home in minutes.

5 Most Common Bansuri Problems And The Exact Fixes That Work Every Single Time

Problem 1 – Airy / hissy sound

Fix → 90 % finger leaks

Fix: Do the “Ring of Light” test, meaning thereby:-

Hold your Bansuri up to light (Lamp or Window)

Look through each hole. If you see even a tiny crescent of light, that’s your air leak!

Adjust until every hole is completely dark = zero leaks = pure tone.

Problem 2 – No sound or only high whistle

Fix: You’re blowing straight IN instead of ACROSS the hole.

→ Tilt the blowing hole downward 30° and blow like you’re fogging glasses. Clear note in 10 seconds.

Problem 3 – Sudden crack or split in bamboo

Fix (if hairline):

→ Apply one drop of fevicol + wrap tightly with cotton thread immediately

→ Leave 24 hours → 80 % chance it survives forever

(Big crack = send to maker for repair)

Problem 4 – Lower notes not coming (Pa, Dha, Ni sounds blank)

Fix: Bottom holes not fully covered OR too much moisture.

→ Wipe inside + check finger placement + slightly increase air speed

Problem 5 – Tuning gone off (sounds out of tune with tanpura app)

Fix order:

Check if thread became loose → re-wrap tightly

Check for tiny cracks

If still off → send 30-second recording to seller (good makers fix free under warranty)

Bonus Quick-Fix Cheat Sheet (Screenshot This!)

Airy sound → fingers

No sound → blowing angle

Lower notes blank → finger seal + more air

Crack → fevicol + thread

Out of tune → thread first, then maker
