In a world where books line our shelves and screens fill our
hands, sometimes the most profound shift happens when someone simply asks,
“Which book are you reading?” This light-hearted yet deeply
meaningful conversation unfolded with a book lover who was fond of reading—yet
hesitant about the one book that promises to transform every difficulty into
bliss.
I noticed him immersed in a book and asked warmly,
“Which book are you reading? Seems you are fond of reading books?”
“Yes… Actually :)” he replied with a shy smile.
“So may I have the honour of giving you the Bhagavad
Gita!!”
He paused, then shared his honest concern: “It’s very
difficult to understand and absorb this book…”
I nodded understandingly. “Wasn’t it difficult to go to
school when you were first admitted for getting educated? Wasn’t it difficult
the first time you had to start exercise? And so on…”
I continued gently, “Sorry, I’m not making you feel low
by sharing these bitter truths—just helping you become conscious that you’ve
already faced many difficulties in life due to which you have achieved whatever
you have achieved. So why get scared of reading this merciful song spoken
directly by our real father, Lord Krishna? Why not face this ‘difficulty’
now—if you think it is one—when actually it is the greatest boon? It will only
make you happy and wise, don’t worry : )”
He looked thoughtful. “So are you sure that this could
be understood by a layman…?”
“Absolutely,” I assured him with confidence.
In that moment, he accepted the book, taking a courageous
step forward.
I am thankful to him for recognizing the Gita not as a
daunting task, but as a boon in this difficult life!
All glories to Srila Prabhupada, who presented this supreme
scripture in such a clear, compassionate way that even beginners can dive in
and taste real happiness.
This encounter is a push for all of us: We avoid the Gita
thinking it’s “too difficult,” yet we’ve already conquered countless
firsts—first day at school, first exercise, first big responsibility. Each
time, what seemed impossible became manageable, even joyful. The Bhagavad Gita
is no different: it starts as a challenge to the mind, but quickly becomes a
comforting embrace from Lord Krishna Himself. With sincere effort (even just a
verse a day), it reveals itself layer by layer, turning fear into faith,
confusion into clarity, and difficulty into divine delight.
If you’ve ever hesitated to pick up spiritual reading
because it felt “too advanced,” let this story remind you: You’ve
faced harder things before—and won. Why not give this merciful song a chance
today? Start small, stay open, and watch how it becomes your greatest friend.
Have you ever overcome that initial “difficulty”
with a spiritual practice? What helped you take the first step? Share
